History Behind Christmas
Christmas history dates back to 336 A.D. when the day was first celebrated by the ancients Rome. Initially, the Roman Catholic Church merged the Saturnalia custom to the festival of Natalis Solis Invicti which were celebrated on 25th of December.
Later the day was celebrated to rejoice the birthday of Jesus Christ in place of pagan holidays. However, the exact date of Christ birth is not mentioned anywhere. At the festival people exchange gifts and have meet-ups worldwide. Santa Claus is the legendary figure, plays a pivotal role in this secular fiesta. The most famous image of Santa Claus is linked to Saint Nicholas who was a 4th century Christian Saint. The current image of Santa Claus is drawn by the Thomas Nast (cartoonist) in 1863 and the figure was further described in the poem “A Visit from St. Nicholas” in 1823.
How Christmas was celebrated in ancient times?
Years before the birth of Jesus, European celebrate the birth and light in the days of winter. There are also stories of celebration of winter solstices, so they could look forward to happy longer days. In Scandinavia era the Norse rejoiced Yule, the winter solstice from 21st December to onwards. They used to set log on fire hoping for blessings and happiness throughout the year.
German people also celebrated the winter days in the honor of the pagan god Odin. The days were rejoiced to praise the god of Agriculture where winters were not harsh during Saturnalia period. In early years there used to be an Easter holiday to celebrate the days. After the birth of Jesus, Christians didn’t officially celebrate the day. Later on, during 4th-century church officially celebrated the birth of Jesus.
Was Christmas a Pagan Tradition?
The Christians leader started to celebrate Christmas similarly as winter solstice festival. During the middle ages, the most popular pagan holidays were Roman Saturnalia and Germanic Yule. Later Christian missionaries replaced the pagan holidays and officially celebrated the day as Christmas. In the days of Christmas holidays, people celebrated the festival by attending church, singing carols, carnival-like atmosphere and donated the food and drink to poor.
Nowadays, Christmas is celebrated by Christians and non-Christians. It involves different traditions and customs which can vary from place to place but here we are listing down some of the popular traditions.
The Christmas days are celebrated from the ancient time in which people bring trees in their houses and places as a sign of hope for the upcoming year. Different trees symbolize different meanings such as Egyptians link palm trees to god Baal Tamar, Greeks and Romans associate fir tree to the mother of Adonis. Different colors of tree are used like White Christmas Tree is used for decoration.
The German tribes worshipped oak trees for the winter solstice. The evergreen tree of Christmas symbolizes everlasting happiness and hope for the blessed new year. The Christmas tree was introduced in Germany when Prince Albert was married to Queen Victoria in 1840 and later it was brought to America by Germans.
Hanging Stockings on Tree
Hanging stockings on the tree is another popular tradition of Christmas. The traditions were recognized in Victorian-era in which people would hang shoes by filling hay in them. According to another story St. Nicholas hung the stockings and gold balls down the chimney. In modern days people hang the cookies, decoration pieces, lights on the trees.
Mistletoe is hanged on the doors which symbolizes God’s reconciliation with humans and joining of earth and heavens. Kiss under the mistletoe tree is considered as the sign of acceptance and reunion
Christmas caroling is another famous tradition of the beautiful festival in which people sing special Christmas carols to celebrate the day. Everyone exchanges, special wishes and have a get together to cheer each other.
Date back to 4th century, Saint Nicholas was a bishop from Asia. He used to offer gifts to the children on the feast days. The name of Saint Nicholas was pronounced differently in different regions similarly English called him Santa Claus. Another name of Santa Claus is Kriss Kringle, Germans recognized the 25th December as the birthday of Jesus. Other than Saint Nicholas, three wise men gave gifts to Jesus and this started Christmas gift practice.
The tradition of sharing Christmas wishes through cards was started in the Victorian era in which people used to write best wishes and season’s greetings to their loved ones in the form of letters. Later in 1843, Sir Henry Cole put forth the idea of printing black and white cards which were colored by hand. In 1862 the concept of merry Christmas cards was more commercialized and become popular.
They’re believed to a story behind the J shaped candy canes and red stripes. The J shape of the candy cane signifies “J” of Jesus, white color represents purity and red stripes symbolize blood. Whereas the peppermint flavor of the candy is associated with hyssop mentioned in the Bible.
As the most famous accouterments, the holly represents the crown of the thorns which was worn by Jesus at the time of the crucifixion. The red color of berries symbolizes the blood.
In Chaldean language, the term yule means child, Germanic tribes and Anglo Saxons celebrated the Child day also named as the Yule day in the past. The tradition also rejoiced in France, Italy, and Europe. On the day of fiesta, people used to collect logs and set them on fire with sprinkled salt, oil and mulled wine to guard their homes against devils. Later people started to use the log to decorate the evergreen trees with candles. Chefs started to cook yule log-shaped cakes and roll which were decorated with roses and holly
How can you celebrate a joyous Christmas?
Once a year a joyous occasion comes on which all family and friends gather around and offer their best wishes and receive gifts from one another. For me, Christmas is a nostalgic time in which we reminisce good times and experiences as we gather around the Christmas tree. It’s always best to celebrate Christmas with friends or family in order to make it even more joyous.
Let yourself feel the aura of Christmas around you by the decoration you make. It’s a time when everyone gathers around, and tacky decoration will not do in order to keep the spirit alive throughout the holiday. You don’t have to try really hard but can do so as the way you like along with keeping the budget in check.
A Christmas tree in a corner with decorative elements on it along with patterned stockings hanging over the mantle, mistletoe, and wreath, etc. Kids enjoy this occasion by hanging their toys and whatever they want on the tree and the spirit is fulfilled as the main purpose for these decorations is bringing life into the house.
You can enjoy Christmas with the best menus available, however, some families have specific menus running through the generations, others try to make somewhat different kind of menus. Like some enjoy eggnogs while others may prefer hot chocolates or even wine.
In some families, some meals are made by the hosts and others by the guests. You can pull off some pranks too like switching cream of one or two Oreos with toothpaste. A few harmless pranks can bring the party to life.
Fun or Surprise Activities
Christmas can be made more fun by various sets of activities like meeting relatives, playing games, watching Christmas based movies, to reminisce the Christmas spirit, or even talking to people you love and remembering good times.
If you have a grandpa or a grandma in your family, you can always sit with them and hear stories about their Christmas in the younger days and their most memorable moments.
Gift exchanging is by far the most fun activity. All the feelings are hyped at this moment especially if the gift exchange is a white elephant in which everyone brings gifts and they are set under the Christmas tree.
The gifts contain goods that are not named for anyone then the countdown begins and everyone picks up the gifts which they like the best from the exterior. This occasion is especially really exciting with every gift opening the level of excitement reaches the top and this feels really good.
Making Christmas fun for your family and you yourself can be exciting but making this occasion a source of happiness for others too can keep the Christmas spirit going throughout the year.
You can always participate in helping those who don’t have the capacity to do so for themselves or their families. You can make meals for them or donate some gifts and help them feel the joy of Christmas with you. It can make you feel complacent and helpful.
The occasion of Christmas is a time for celebrating the birth of Jesus. At this time of the year, we rejuvenate our faith and remember our customs and traditions and search for ourselves as to how to be helpful to our peers in the time of distress.

Santa Claus and Christmas Eve
A figure that is quite popular across the world for bringing gifts to children on Christmas eve. This tradition has started to gain traction since the mainstreaming of Saint Nicholas in 4th Century, which later started to become popular in New York – then New Amsterdam – where Dutch are given credit in transferring the legend of Sinterklaas to the United States. Whereas, the contemporary manifestation of Santa Clause has found its origin back to a cartoonist Thomas Nast, who had drawn images of present-day Santa Clause in 1863, which offered close resemblance to the illustration given by Haddon Sundblom in the depiction of Santa Nicholas’s poem published in 1823.
Santa Claus is often told to have lived somewhere near the north pole. Where he used to manufacture the toys, started to deliver on Christmas eve to the homes of children drawn by many of his reindeer’s after receiving the request by the children who were seeking Christmas gifts. It is said that he used to crawl into homes of children through chimneys and leave the gifts before departing. This is how even today father Christmas is believed to play a role for children on Christmas eve, where many children across Europe and the United States are aspirants to be given gifts by Santa Clause.
This is why excitement rises among the children as the eve of Christmas is getting near, and so do their idealisation of how Santa Clause would have started to make its list before setting off on his World long tour in his effort to deliver precious presents to children and this has to happen super-fast with lightning speed, which makes children anxiously awaiting and excited about the generosity of Santa and capability of his magnificent trustworthy reindeer.
